What is a workplace culture?
The workplace culture is the atmosphere, the climate, in which people at work go about their daily business.
A workplace culture is created by its identity – what is this organisation about? The values which underpin it. Is this a business where equality is important, opportunity, or is it one where the value money rules all else? Does the organisation stand up for its staff in the face of changing national agendas, does it believe in empowerment? Is it a go getting business, a thriving business? Is it a developing business, an investor in people?
The abilities of the the organisation, the team, the individuals. What can this organisation do?
The behaviours and actions that go on all the time – what happens on a day to day basis, are staff rewarded, are they encouraged, or are the ignored, blamed or bullied? In a blame culture, staff will never be at their best because they will not be able to report or own up to mistakes – and mistakes are there to be listened to.
The environment – a workplace environment can speak volumes about the expectations, outcomes and value.
We know that certain cultures produce better business outcomes than others. A culture of bullying, is likely to result in poor performance, increased stress levels, and higher absenteeism. A culture of professional as well as organisational growth is likely to result in higher performance levels, less stress, higher staff retention – and therefore increased profits and business growth.
At YBIM, we work with organisations to create positive work cultures, through resolution of conflict, identification of shared goals, and embedding the principles of effective people management.
